If you lived in Victorian England, horses wouldn’t have been merely a passion or a hobby, but rather a way of life, a fact of daily existence. Whether it was travel, work or play, horses were there for you to see you through. So, it’s no wonder that the horseshoe was one of the Victorian’s favorite motifs!
This silver horseshoe brooch is quintessentially English. With it’s wonderful detail and large size, it’s quite a beauty and I was certainly happy to stumble upon it while shopping the wonderful antiques fair at Ardingly. The brooch measures 1.5 inches (39.4 mm) long and equally as wide. I’m sorry, clearly we should have cleaned it a bit better before taking it’s photo, I’ll see that it gets a bit of a clean before it goes out. The back has a small dent, the front it perfect. While it’s unmarked, we’ve acid tested it to verify that’s crafted in sterling silver. It weighs 5.7 grams.
Made in England around 1880.
