Antique Victorian Turquoise Garnet Gold Snake Brooch Pin

$ 1,280.00

The serpent has been connected to humanity for as far back as we look. Adam, Eve, Ra, the ancient Romans and Africans, all held a place in their art and symbolism for the snake. Some saw him as the God of Sun, some associated him with Original Sin, others saw him as signs of Good Fortune, of Protection. Snakes are, in fact, one of the most deadly animals in the world and as humans we are hard wired to have a visceral reaction to them, so it’s no surprise that they should hold such a enduring place in the souls of man.

This fantastic snake is all pattern and smooth shiny gold. Hand crafted in England in about 1870, he has good slither. His head is set with two twinkling faceted, red glowing garnet eyes and a stream of 6 bright blue turquoise gems flows down his back. The brooch measures 38.2 mm wide and 21.4 mm from top to bottom, it closes with a C clasp. This unmarked brooch tests as 15 karat gold and weighs 4.7 grams.
