Antique Silver Moonstone Skonvirke Brooch by William Fuglede
Antique Silver Moonstone Skonvirke Brooch by William Fuglede
$ 1,500.00
Like Jugenstil in Germany, Skonvirke was the name of the movement in Denmark which paralleled the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements in England and France, and like Jugenstil, it was named for a magazine. While Georg Jensen was perhaps the most famous of the Skonvirke movement, William Fuglede was also very well known, and produced jewelry in Copenhagen from 1907-1937. His jewels all have wonderful swirling lines and while hollow, they have a big, chunky look to them.
I always like a good Skonvirke piece, but this brooch set with wonderful blue moonstones was an easy choice, it’s a wonderful large size at 79 mm from top to bottom and 57 mm across. It’s set with two cabochon moonstones, one round one that measures 5.2 mm in diameter and one oval one that measures about 6x8 mm in diameter, both are closed backed, so it’s not possible to get a depth measurement. The brooch is marked to the reverse with ’830’ indicating the silver content and ‘Wm F’ for the maker, William Fuglede, it weighs 14.8 grams. Made in Denmark in about 1915.
