Adorned with two angels cradling baby Jesus while the dove of Peace shines light upon him on one side and delicate lilies on the reverse, this petite treasure measures 25mm north to south and 17.8mm across, weighing a mere 2.1 grams. This pendant is marked “Fix”. Fix is a French mark denoting a closely guarded formula of superior quality rolled gold jewellery used from the early mid-19th century. Copper or brass was covered with unusually thick 18-carat or 14-carat gold which does not typically show signs of wear, unlike most rolled or filled gold pieces. The very best designers were commissioned to come up with these pieces and the idea was to create jewellery of such good design and quality that it could not easily be distinguished from its solid gold counterparts.
