Georgian Charles Horsfall Portrait Gold and Pearl Pendant Brooch
$ 6,230.00
Born June 21st, 1776, Charles Horsfall would go on to lead quite an interesting life. At the age of 16, he would travel to Jamaica and establish himself as a merchant and trader, at 27 he would marry Dorothy Hall Berry, and together they would have 12 children. At 53 he became Bailiff of Liverpool and four years later its Mayor. Over his life he built up an empire for himself trading with West Africa, the West Indies and the Americas. This miniature shows him as a young man, dressed in a fine white shirt and blue jacket was perhaps done for his mother before he left for Jamaica. Sea travel was perilous back then and no doubt his mother would want a portrait of him before he left.
Open the magnificent box that was made to act as both holder and frame for this magnificent piece and it reveals a true treasure; an 18k gold and pearl miniature portrait, delicately nestled within its fitted case, and bearing to the reverse the engraved inscription "Charles Horsfall born June 21st, 1776." Crafted with meticulous artistry, the portrait is surrounded by 24 lustrous (almost certainly natural) pearls that frame the miniature, the 34 large and creamy pearls measure 4 mm each. The long bale has an additional 5 pearls that are graduated in size. The portrait itself, a testament to the skilled hands of an accomplished artist, captures the likeness of Charles Horsfall with remarkable detail and nuance, preserving his visage for generations to come. It is signed and says 'copy by', which I would think means that this miniature was copied from a larger painting of young Charles. This 18 karat gold pendant measures 76 mm north to south and 44.5 mm across, the top bale is removable so that it can be worn as a brooch, outside of the box it weighs 35.2 grams.
Charles Horsfall died a wealthy man on June 18th 1846, just shy of his 70th birthday, his family built a church in Liverpool to honor him and his descendants have served as Mayor of Liverpool and in Parliament as well as building several other churches in Liverpool. Whether displayed proudly in a cherished collection or worn close to the heart, this miniature portrait encapsulates the timeless allure of artistry and history, inviting you to step into the world of 18th-century aristocracy.
