If you were an Englishman who lived in Victorian times, and you were a person of means, you would probably go on a Grand Tour of Europe when you came of age (around 20). On this tour, you would visit the great cities and museums of the continent and Italy would be a key destination. While in Italy you would likely pick up a souvenir or three or take back with you to England. A cameo or intaglio would be tops amongst these, and once back in England you would take them to a jeweler to be set into a ring or brooch, a gift for your mother or future bride.
This wonderful hand crafted cameo was made by a skilled artisan and has fantastic details. It showcases Jupiter and Maia and their child, Mercury. Mercury was a major god in Roman mythology, he was the god of financial gain, of eloquence and luck, of trickery and thieves and also served as the guide of souls to the Underworld. This cameo is set in a simple 9 karat gold bezel frame which is marked ‘9ct’ on the reverse. The brooch dates to about 1880 and was made in England, it measures 59.8 mm from top to bottom and 47.4 mm across and weighs 20.7 grams.
