It’s amazing what jewelers used to be able to create with just a little bit of material. Collars like this one, hollow and meticulously hand crafted, were testimony to their immense skill. In the 1880s and through the turn of the century jewelers got better and better at making small amounts of metal into jewelry that even by todays standards can only be described as ‘chunky’. Nowadays pieces like this would be heavy affairs put together of links that are cast into molds; they never seem to match the light, smooth velvety feel of a chain like this one.
This chain was hand crafted in the 1890s in continental Europe; it is 17.75 inches long and has a big jump ring which could be worn at the front to hang a pendant or locket. This wonderful neck piece has a love knot motif with a bit of nautical vibe. This chain is marked but I can’t make them out, it tests as minimum 850 silver and weighs 49.6 grams.
