Whenever I go to London I always make a few hours to visit the sprawling Victorian era, Tudor revival building at the corner of Regent Street and Great Marlborough Street that is Liberty & Company. Liberty & Co. opened their doors here in 1885 and expanded in the 1920s. To visit their store is to step back in history, you can feel the building vibrate with it, the smoothness of the hand carved railings, the slight digits in the star trees from millions of people going up and down. You might be forgiven for thinking that you are in the past, after all the quality and quantity of beautiful things in this store hasn’t changed all that much in over 100 years. Take this necklace for example, it would look just as good in Liberty today as it did when it was first retailed there in about 1910.
Hand crafted by Barnet Henry Joseph, this gorgeous necklace is set with shimmering mother of pearl plaques and has such an iconic Art Nouveau look with its whiplash and leaf motifs. Marked to the reverse with the mark of the maker, ‘BHJ’ and ‘9ct’ for the gold content. This stunning necklace is 17 inches around the neck and weighs 4.8 grams.
