Here he is, an unknown gentleman of distinction, with his wonderful white wig and crisp bowtie, he must be his his Mum’s pride and joy. Certainly, this brooch was made for her, with a lock of his hair at the reverse to keep a small part of him always close to her heart.
I don’t think that his hair piece was done as a memorial, but rather as a memento, possibly as a gift. The portrait miniature is hand painted and the hair at the back is tied with a little bow and mounted under glass in a little locket. The piece is mounted with both a pin stem for wearing as a brooch and also a jump ring at the time to wear it as a locket.
Hand crafted in England in the Georgian era, around 1780-90, this gorgeous piece is done in all 15 karat gold. Overall, this beauty measures 42.4 mm top to bottom and 32.1 mm across, it’s 9.2 mm thick and weighs 12.9 grams, unmarked but acid tested as 15 karat.
