Gently cradled in it’s rich gold mounting, this wonderful Old European cut diamond has a soft cushiony shape, a lovely fat girdle and a fantastic hand cut look. This sparkly ring may well have been made to be worn during a state of mourning as it’s accented with black enamel shoulders.
I believe this ring to be French in origin, it has a a somewhat worn makers mark that shows the diamond cartouche typical of a French makers mark, it seems to have been re-sized near the marks and may have lost it’s purity mark at that time. The size 6.5 US ring was most certainly made around 1860 and tests as 18 karat gold. The diamond measures 4.2 x 3.35 x 2.75 mm and weighs approximately .25-.3 carats. The ring measures 6.7 mm north to south and 15.2 mm across and sits 3.6 mm off the finger. The ring tapers to 1.4 mm at the back of the band. The enamel is in very nice condition, but it isn’t perfect, please look closely at the images. This ring weighs 1.2 grams.
This lovely ring could be used as an engagement ring, but care should taken to protect the enamel, I wouldn’t recommend this one for all-day everyday wear, not one to be showered or exercised in!
