Edwardian Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Pendant Brooch, Garland Era Convertible

     Provided that you were sufficiently wealthy, in possession of a proper pedigree, and on intimate terms with all the right people, you could pretty much live a life of complete and utter ease as an Edwardian Lady.  If you were married, your breakfast would be brought to you in bed, your lady's maid would come in to dress you, or bathe you, or both; to do your hair into any elaborate fashion you desired. You might spend your mornings writing letters to your friends (we call this texting today), you might do some needlepoint, play for a bit on the pianoforte. Then time to change into riding gear and perhaps a different hair do for going along on a ‘hunt’, where the men enjoyed shooting their guns and the hounds did most of the actual hunting. You might go to luncheon at two, attend a garden party (which would of course, require yet another hair do, another ensemble) and not get home until an hour or two before Dinner, most of which would be taken up with changing into your most elaborate attire of the day. Your lady's maid would bring in a tray of jewels that the Housekeeper or Butler had recently removed from the vault. Based on the dress, the hair and who was coming to dinner, you’d choose the appropriate jewels for that evening. It would be very hard not to choose this particular jewel every time. Even on those less formal occasions when you didn’t choose it, you’d still pick it up to have a look. Still hold it up to the brand new electric light to get a closer look. And every time you’d relish the way the diamonds sparkled and flashed, revel in the look and feel of the luscious, creamy pearl, something so exotic and from so far away!

     This fantastic Garland Era convertible brooch/pendant was handcrafted around 1900-1905. It is beautifully made with an eye to every detail. The pendant boasts a large bow at the top which is set with rose cut diamonds. Dangling from the bow is a wreath with a fantastic creamy teardrop shaped pearl at its center.  The wreath is bezel set with four full cut diamonds with lovely millgraining and many rose cuts for added sparkle and luster. The largest bottom diamond weighs approximately .4 carats, the other two on the sides are about .2 each and the smallest at the top is about .05. The total diamond weight for the full cut stones is about .85-.9 carats. There are an additional 108 rose cut diamonds set throughout. The wonderful, large creamy pearl measures 11.3 mm long and 7.4 mm across at the widest point. The pin stem screws off and there are two hangers at the top where a chain can be attached for the necklace conversion.      This pendant has been acid tested to confirm its platinum content.  There may be a French mark on it, but to be honest, I couldn’t make it out, so I’m not sure. I’ve included a photo, anyway, it’s below and to the left of the pin stem in the detail shot. This one measures 1 1/4 inches across and 1 3/4 inches long and weighs 10.5 grams.

     Dinner may well lead to entertaining or even a ball, and this evening outfit might well be the one you’re in for the longest part of the day, you might not have it off until mid-night or later, so make sure you choose your jewels well!
