When I was younger, my family made frequent visits—about every other year—to Ireland, where I seemingly had thousands of cousins. Several of my great-uncles, who were hale and hearty and still in the habit of looking quite “smart” for biweekly mass, would wear the bespoke suits and hats of their bygone age, and always—always—a pocket watch. I thought they looked like they’d stepped out of a movie, so debonair and elegant. In my teen years, I was more enthralled by the handsome, edgy twenty-something boys who were reestablishing the fashion, with their secondhand striped waistcoats and gleaming watch fobs, bicycling to university. My goodness, how I pined! Still, to this day, I swoon a little when catch sight of a fella with a watch chain, and I’m delighted the fob is back in fashion. Still so much swooning on my part!

This gorgeous Edwardian Watch Chain is the epitome of style and poise. The 9 karat gold curb linked chain is a deep gold, somewhere between saffron and sunshine. Made in Birmingham in 1919, it is a wonderfully timeless piece. At 16 inches long, it would not only be perfect for a watch or wallet, but also absolutely delicious as a necklace. In the hand, it has a supple, heavy silk feel. This antique chain bears several hallmarks: ‘9,’ ‘.373’, an anchor, a ‘U’ for 1919, and the maker’s mark ‘EWC.’ It weighs 44.5 grams.
