We were at a drive-in movie theatre on a thick summer night, the stars were out, the moon was waning. My Little Chicadee played on the silver screen, his arm was draped over my shoulder.
That’s quite the ring you have there, Victoria.
Oh this? A handsome man gave it to me.
He has good taste.
He gets it from me.
He was concerned it might be too conventional for you. But, who says conventional has to be boring?
I held up my hand so the light from the projector could catch the opals just right. I thanked him for my ring, admiring the glimmer, right before stealing the rest of the salty popcorn.
This antique opal ring was handcrafted in Chester, England in 1906. It’s an Edwardian piece, made in 18 karat gold with five round cabochon cut opals across the ring face. The largest opal can be found at the center, it measures 6 x 5.4 x 2.6 mm. This ring is a size 8 and it weighs 3.7 grams. The ring face measures 8.6 mm north to south and 20.1 mm across. It sits 5 mm off the finger and the band width is 2.1 mm at the back. It bears the date letter mark, “f”, the gold purity mark, “18”, and the assay mark for Chester.
The opal is the most shimmering of stones, in my professional opinion. They’re every color of the rainbow, and I swear they invent colors we’ve never seen before.
