Oh, boy, sometimes I wonder so hard about things. I look for all the little clues as to what something is, when it was made, where it was made; I even think deeper about who it was made for, who might have owned it, how many someones, what their lives were like. Take these wonderful earrings, they are beautifully hand crafted, the hand textured leaves, the greenish tint to the yellow gold, the fact that they are 15 karat gold, the color of the coral, the fact that it’s cut round and not faceted, the little repairs that they’ve had over time, if the wires are original, they all add up in my mind to equal an idea of the what, the where the when and the who.
In my mind, I feel that these earrings are quite early, probably dating into the Georgian era, sometime around 1780 (earlier and the beads would likely be faceted, later and the gold would be more yellow, etc.). These beauties were made in England and are done all in 15 karat gold (which is unmarked but which we’ve carefully acid tested). The coral beads measure 12.9 mm across and the earrings are 28 mm from north to south including the wires. These lovely earrings are eminently wearable and together they weigh 8.1 grams.
