Antique Scottish Silver Cloak Pin Elaborate Knot Form Dated 1847

This superb and extremely rare Victorian silver brooch has extensive and historical city hallmarks for Exeter, England and Hallmarks for being made in 1847.

Created by silversmith Henry S. Ellis, this remarkable brooch is superb quality and steeped in history. Henry Ellis was appointed Silversmith In Ordinary to Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1841 and exhibited in the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Crystal Palace, London where the Queen personally purchased 5 of his silver brooches.

The brooch itself is beautiful, fashioned as a swirling ribbon with an interesting fitting meant to hold the full folds of a plaid or cloak, it is exquisitely chased and engraved with flowers and flourishes; the workmanship and quality is outstanding. The piece is marked with a design registration which reads: “REGd OCTr 21 1847, H.S. ELLIS EXETER”, it also has a full set of hallmarks for Exeter, Sterling Silver and the year 1847. To add even more interest the Exeter hallmarks are rare too, Exeter assay office closed in 1883 resulting in these historical town hallmarks becoming very desirable and highly sought after. It measures 70mm high by 30mm wide with a depth of 15mm and weighs 28.6 grams.
