In England Boxing Day is the day after Christmas, the day that the staff of a manor would be given the day off after serving the family on Christmas Day. Often they would be given boxed lunches and dinners and boxes with gifts and the name Boxing Day emerged (I know, I always imagined people with puffy gloves having a bit of a post-Christmas row, myself!).
A brooch like this one could easily have been given as a Boxing Day gift from the lady of the house to her most trusted maid, and in fact there is a scene in Downton Abbey where Mary gives just such a brooch to Anna on the day after Christmas.
This sweet and beautifully crafted piece is set with bright and sparkly almandine garnets with a deep pink hue and creamy white seed pearls. The curvature and light airy feel give it a bit of an Art Nouveau aspect, the utility and workmanship put it squarely in the 1910s in origin. Hand crafted from 9 karat gold, this wonderful brooch is set with 6 round garnets and measures 21 mm north to south and 34.5 mm across, it weighs 2.4 grams and is marked with ‘9ct’ for 9 karat gold.
