Antique Hammered Silver Perfume Bottle Pendant

To understand this perfect little scent bottle you might have to put yourself on the streets of a Victorian City. Imagine people going about their day, walking across streets on boards so as not to step in the mud and the muck. That’s right, muck, these weren’t paved streets or likely even cobblestone, although in the richer parts they might be. These are streets trodden all day by horses, and pooped on by them too. Add to this smell, the smoke from  fires that heated every home and business and the general lack of running water and good hygiene and you might start to know why a tiny scent bottle like this was so important. simple unscrew the lid and hold it under the nose, dab a little on your wrist wave it front of your face and you’d have some relief from the stinky life of a late 1800s city.

This wonderful little scent bottle was hand crafted in hammered silver and set with a tiny sapphire or blue paste, the lid unscrews fully and it’s somewhat amazing that it hasn’t been lost over the long years of its life. I suspect this would have originally been worn on a chatelaine, it measures 40.9 mm from the top of the chain and 18.4 mm across, is marked ‘800’ for the silver and weighs 2.6 grams.

Made in Europe in about 1890 with a bit of Arts and Crafts or Jugendstil flair!
