Antique Arts and Crafts Amethyst Mother of Pearl Bracelet 9k Gold

The art of mourning peaked in the Victorian era, perfected by Queen Victoria herself who spent forty years perfecting it. She would never stop mourning the death of her beloved Albert and would wear black until her death. The kind of strict mourning that the Victorians observed petered out pretty early in the 20th Century, perhaps due to the incredible loss of young British men during the first World War.

This bracelet was made after Victoria died, but before WWI and it is notable that it contains amethyst and mother of pearl, after a year of all black, a woman in mourning could add purple and white back to her wardrobe and so a bracelet like this one would be one of the first few colorful and bright things she could wear as she came out of mourning for another year. Set into a very Arts and Crafts style bracelet are 3 sparkling rich violet faceted amethyst gems and alternating with these are three creamy white mother of pearl panels. The beautifully made bracelet is marked ‘9ct’ for the gold content on the clasp. This beauty is 7 inches long and just over .25 inches wide, it weighs 10.6 grams. Made in England in about 1905-1910, perhaps by Murrle, Bennett and Co..
