Who this lovely lady is, I just do not know. She was someones daughter, that much is for certain. Was she someones mother, someones one true love? Her stylish dress and bright ribbons show her playful spirit and the artist has depicted her with sleepy, bedroom eyes. Perhaps she commissioned this little portrait for her husband, so that he could gaze upon her visage at will? I guess we’ll never know for certain, but I was charmed by her wiles and I think you might be, too!
Handcrafted in about 1820, this early locket features and enamel portrait in miniature on its front and an elaborately engraved engine turned design to its reverse. The locket measures 37.8 top to bottom and 28 mm across and it weighs 9.3 grams. This piece has no marks but we’ve carefully acid tested it and it comes up as 18 karat gold. I purchased this lovely locket in France and I suspect it was made there as well.
