Still-life paintings are known for their depictions of motionless objects; their color, texture, form, and composition. They’re paintings that express life, emotion, and most of all - skill. It was the Renaissance that saw the still-life painting as an independent genre, although it has existed since before antiquity. The 16th and 17th centuries saw a rise in popularity with still-life paintings as the middle class grew and placed these masterpieces inside their homes.
This antique Scandinavian Arts and Crafts silver enamel ring was handcrafted around 1910. It’s a colorful ring with an enameled still-life motif of a pitcher with an apple and a pear set in 900 silver on a large amorphous ring face. The ring face measures 32 mm north to south and 22 mm across, it sits 3.9 mm off the finger and the band width is 5.6 mm at the back of the ring. It is a size 7.5 and weighs 10.0 grams. It bears the silver fineness mark, “900” and the maker’s mark, “HUISEN”.
Henri Matisse was a French artist at the time this ring was made. He created many things such as prints, sculptures, paintings, and more. His renderings of still-life objects took the still-life genre to new levels as he simplified perspective and used multi-colored backgrounds set behind bold flat objects that had been brightly shaded. His paintings reminded me of the image on this ring, with colors as bright as a rainbow and a new take on perspective.
