Egyptian Revival Silver Enamel Round Locket

The tomb of King Tutankhamen, discovered in 1922, was filled with treasures beyond imagining. Over five thousand objects including; bracelets, rings, amulets and earrings, furniture, masks and golden icons, bottles and jugs of wines and perfumes were all buried with the young King to help pave his way to the afterlife.
Even before this amazing discovery, many of the ancient treasures being discovered in Egypt were being taken by Victorian era tourist, brought back to Europe after a "Grand Tour". And, there was a bustling trade in jewelry made as reminders of the amazing treasures that they had seen on their journeys. This Victorian era interest in Egypt Revival jewelry carried on through the 1920's and the discovery of Tut's tomb, and this lovely locket would fit into that tradition. Made around 1920, it is a hand enameled portrait of a Pharaoh in profile, and still has a slightly worn light gold gilded finish.
Marked with an "800" silver mark, this stylish locket was likely made in Egypt or possibly in Europe. It measure 37.2 mm x 30.3 x 6.6 mm and weighs 8 grams.
