Early Georgian Emerald Diamond Pendant
Early Georgian Emerald Diamond Pendant
$ 6,850.00
John Rackham was his real name, but everyone who knew him feared him and everyone who feared him knew him as Calico Jack. In a life that reads like a Starz TV series, he lived, loved and thieved the high seas in the early 1700s in a time that was known as the Golden Age of Piracy. He teamed up with Mary Read and Anne Bonny, two of the most notorious female Pirates to have ever lived. Together they stole ships, built up crews from the ports of Jamaica and the Caribbean and terrorized the high seas. In November of 1720 all three were arrested and while Rackham was executed, it was discovered that both Read and Bonny were with child and their executions were stayed.
This fantastic pendant was around back in 1720, I like to think that maybe the fiery, red-haired, Irish lass Anne Bonny took it as a prize and wore it for awhile, perhaps she gifted to the child she bore to Calico Jack, perhaps it sailed the high seas around the neck of an Irish Pirate Queen?
This fantastic pendant is over 200 years old, it was hand crafted with natural Emerald and accented by early old mine cut and Mazarin cut diamonds. The three Emeralds are set into an articulated pendant of 18 karat yellow gold which is accented with black enamel. The emeralds appear to be natural and untreated, the largest is a squarish antique cut stone that weighs approximately 1.18 carats, the smaller pear cut weighs about .34 carats and the emerald in the bale about .08 carats. The pendant is further set with 5 old Mazarin cut diamonds and 9 old mine cuts, the diamonds add up to .5 carats in total. There is a stabilizing double bar across the back of the main Emerald which appears to have been added after the original manufacture, but is quite old.
This pendant measures 50 mm long and 18 mm wide and weighs 5.13 grams, it’s not marked but has been carefully acid tested to verify content. The small emerald in the bail is badly chipped, otherwise it’s in amazing condition for its age. Comes with a full appraisal and replacement value of $8,000.
