Antique Scottish Pebble Bow Brooch, Victorian c. 1890, Agate and Sterling Silver

     There is an excellent book by Ginny Redington Dawes called ‘Victorian Jewelry: Unexplored Treasures’.  It has the most wonderful photographs of Victorian jewelry, and especially of Scottish pebble jewelry.  When I came across this fantastic Scottish agate bow brooch on my last trip to London, I thought immediately of this book, it was like this one jumped on of one of those luxurious glossy pages.

     This fantastic and brightly colored sterling silver bow was hand crafted in England around 1890.  It is set with a blazing array of agates, each carefully handcut to fit this piece and set smoothly with a wonderful feel in the hand.  The stones of this brooch have been carefully checked with a jewelers loupe and I don’t see any cracks or notable chips.  This brooch closes with a C-catch and has an extended pin stem, as was the custom of the time. It is a sizable piece and really makes a statement on, measuring 2 inches across and 1 5/8 inches high.  It weighs 15.6 grams.  It is marked on the back, but it’s not easy to read, it might be a registration mark of some kind, I’ve included a photo.  It has been acid tested to verify the sterling content.  

     Fantastic Scottish brooches don’t cross my path all that often anymore, I used to be able to find one or two each trip, but these days I consider myself lucky to find a nice ordinary one, so you can imagine my delight when I came across this extraordinarily stunning example!
