It’s nothing new for artists to ‘put a bird on it’, they’ve been doing that for as long as there have been birds and artists to draw them. This late 19th century enamel artist depicts a bird that is the very essence of Spring, sitting on its eggs in a nest surrounded by blooming flowers.
This wonderful gold locket has a brightly enameled front with a frame of black enamel around the main image. It was hand crafted in 10 karat gold and has two frames to hold photos. The locket has lovely engraving to the reverse. This piece measures 45.4 mm from top to bottom including the bale and 26.5 mm across, it’s 8.6 mm thick. This locket is unmarked but tests as 10 karat gold. Made around 1870, probably in America, it weighs 9.3 grams.
A note from Victoria, with this and any other enameled lockets, please be sure to close the locket by pressing towards the sides and not directly in the middle of the enameled part as this may cause damage to the enamel.
