Silver Victorian Scottish Penannular Agate Citrine Brooch Pin

$ 790.00

This style of closure is called a Penannular brooch. The form dates back to the Iron Age, but this one dates to the Victorian Era, around 1880. They were very useful as closures for cloaks and plaids, but also very beautiful.

This wonderful Scottish Victorian version of a peninsular brooch is set with lovely smooth agate stones, most likely mined in the Scottish highlands, and accented with a bright citrine faceted and set to mimic the iconic Scottish thistle. Hand crafted in sterling silver, this beautiful piece is finished both front and back and could be worn with either side facing out, kind of a two for one!

The brooch has three stones or perhaps pastes which are bezel set and foil backed, I couldn’t get a good enough look at them due to their closed backs to determine exactly what they are. The brooch measures 63.3 mm top to bottom including the citrine and 52 mm across the circular part, it’s 13 mm thick and weighs 24.6 grams. This beautiful example is crafted in silver and while unmarked has been carefully acid tested as sterling silver.
